Understanding MTTR

A foundational metric for assessing remediation speed, exposure risk, and operational efficiency in vulnerability management.

1. What Is MTTR?

Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR) measures the average time it takes to permanently fix a vulnerability after it is first detected. It includes all remediation types, not just patching, and provides insight into how efficiently vulnerabilities are resolved.

MTTR answers:
“Once a vulnerability is discovered, how long does it take to fully remediate it?”

3. How MTTR Is Calculated in Balbix

Balbix automatically computes MTTR using the following steps:

  1. Define Asset Scope
    MTTR is computed for all assets with relevant vulnerability information and made available for all associated asset groups and filtered asset scopes, within the defined time period.

  2. Identify Remediated Vulnerabilities
    Balbix identifies vulnerabilities marked as
    Closed, Fixed, or Remediated.

  3. Capture Two Key Timestamps

  • Discovery Timestamp: When the vulnerability was first detected.

  • Remediation Timestamp: When the fix was verified.

  1. Compute Time to Remediate
    Remediation Time = Remediation Timestamp – Discovery Timestamp

  2. Calculate Average MTTR
    The average remediation time is calculated across all fixed vulnerabilities in the defined scope.

Note: MTTR reflects your remediation speed for vulnerabilities already fixed, providing a backward-looking but actionable view of operational performance.

4. Interpreting MTTR in Balbix

When reviewing MTTR metrics:

  • Lower MTTR Is Better
    Faster remediation means less risk exposure.

  • Monitor Trends Over Time
    Spikes may indicate delays or resource constraints. A downward trend signals improved process efficiency.

  • Segment for Contextual Insights
    Break down MTTR by:

  • Severity (e.g., Critical vs. Low)

  • Asset type (e.g., servers vs. workstations)

  • Business unit or ownership group

  • Internet-facing vs. internal systems

  • Compare with MTTP and MOVA

  • High MTTR + Low MTTP → Non-patching delays (e.g., config/code fixes)

  • Low MTTR + High MOVA → Backlog of old vulnerabilities not yet addressed

  • Align with SLAs
    Use MTTR to assess whether you are meeting defined remediation timelines by severity.
