Understanding MTTP

A key metric for improving patch management efficiency and reducing cyber risk.

1. What Is MTTP?

Mean Time to Patch (MTTP) measures the average time it takes to apply a vendor-released security patch after it becomes available. It is related to, but different from Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR), focusing specifically on patch-based remediation (excluding config changes, code fixes, etc.).

MTTP answers:
“Once a vendor releases a patch, how long does it take us to successfully deploy it across affected systems?”

3. How MTTP Is Calculated in Balbix

Balbix automates MTTP calculation using the following approach:

  1. Define Asset Scope
    MTTP is computed for all assets with relevant vulnerability patch information and made available for all associated asset groups and filtered asset scopes, within the defined time period

  1. Identify Patch Events
    Detect security patches and application timestamps across assets.

  2. Capture Two Key Timestamps

  • Patch Release Timestamp – when the vendor made the patch available (collected from public disclosures).

  • Patch Deployment Timestamp – when the patch was confirmed installed (from sources such as Balbix HA agents, Tanium, or Cortex XDR).

  1. Compute Individual Times to Patch
    Patch Applied – Patch Released = Time to Patch (in days)

  2. Calculate Weighted Average MTTP
    Balbix applies exponential recency weighting so recent patching behavior impacts the score more than older events. This ensures MTTP reflects current practices and trends.

Note: MTTP calculations are currently supported for OS patches on Windows and macOS assets only.

Required Tools: Balbix Host Analyzer (HA), Tanium, or Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR must be integrated for patch data ingestion.


4. Interpreting MTTP in Balbix

When reviewing MTTP metrics in Balbix:

  • Lower MTTP Is Better
    Indicates faster patching and reduced exposure to known threats.

  • Monitor Trends Over Time
    Look for decreases (improvement) or spikes (potential delays needing investigation).

  • Segment for Contextual Insight
    Filter by asset type, OS, business unit, or criticality to identify areas needing improvement.

  • Compare MTTP and MTTR

  • High MTTP + High MTTR → patching inefficiencies.

  • Low MTTP vs. High MTTR → non-patching remediations (e.g., config changes) may be the bottleneck.

  • Understand the MTTP/MTTR Distinction

  • MTTP is measured from vendor patch release.

  • MTTR is measured from vulnerability detection.

  • MTTP captures responsiveness vs. external patch release dates; MTTR reflects internal remediation workflows.
