What Is MTTR?** **Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR)** measures the average time it takes to permanently fix a vulnerability after it is **first detected**. It includes all remediation types, not just patching, and provides insight into how efficiently vulnerabilities are resolved. MTTR answers: **“Once a vulnerability is discovered, how long does it take to fully remediate it?”** **How Balbix Helps:** Balbix automatically tracks vulnerability discovery and remediation timestamps (via agent data, scans, integrations), and calculates MTTR without the need for manual tracking or spreadsheets. **MTTP vs. MTTR: What’s the Difference?** | **Metric** | **MTTP (Mean Time to Patch)** | **MTTR (Mean Time to Remediate)** | | --- | --- | --- | | **Focus** | Time to apply a vendor-released patch | Time to fully remediate a vulnerability | | **Start Point** | Patch release by vendor | Vulnerability detected in your environment | | **End Point** | Patch deployed and verified | Remediation completed and verified | | **Scope** | Patch-based remediation only | All remediation types (patches, config, code, etc.) | | **Use Case** | Tracks responsiveness to vendor patch release | Measures full remediation cycle performance | | **Benchmark Type** | External benchmark (vendor patch timeline) | Internal benchmark (based on detection to fix) | ### **2. Why MTTR Matters** Tracking MTTR provides critical visibility into your vulnerability management program’s performance: - **Remediation Velocity** MTTR shows how quickly your organization closes security gaps and reduces risk. - **Exposure Window Reduction** Lower MTTR means vulnerabilities are fixed sooner, reducing the time attackers can exploit them. - **Process Efficiency Insight** MTTR reveals how effective your remediation workflows are, including discovery, prioritization, patching, and validation. - **SLA and Compliance Monitoring** Helps track performance against internal SLAs or external regulatory timelines. - **Prioritization Strategy Validation** Analyze MTTR by severity or asset type to confirm high-risk issues are resolved faster. - **Resource Justification** High MTTR supports investment in staffing, automation, or tooling. - **Benchmarking and Goal Setting** Enables internal benchmarking across teams and progress tracking over time. ### **3. How MTTR Is Calculated in Balbix** Balbix automatically computes MTTR using the following steps: 1. **Define Asset Scope** MTTR is computed for all assets with relevant vulnerability information and made available for all associated asset groups and filtered asset scopes, within the defined time period. 2. **Identify Remediated Vulnerabilities** Balbix identifies vulnerabilities marked as *Closed*, *Fixed*, or *Remediated*. 3. **Capture Two Key Timestamps** - **Discovery Timestamp:** When the vulnerability was first detected. - **Remediation Timestamp:** When the fix was verified. 1. **Compute Time to Remediate** Remediation Time = Remediation Timestamp – Discovery Timestamp 2. **Calculate Average MTTR** The average remediation time is calculated across all fixed vulnerabilities in the defined scope. > **Note:** MTTR reflects your remediation speed for vulnerabilities already fixed, providing a backward-looking but actionable view of operational performance. ### **4. Interpreting MTTR in Balbix** When reviewing MTTR metrics: - **Lower MTTR Is Better** Faster remediation means less risk exposure. - **Monitor Trends Over Time** Spikes may indicate delays or resource constraints. A downward trend signals improved process efficiency. - **Segment for Contextual Insights** Break down MTTR by: - Severity (e.g., Critical vs. Low) - Asset type (e.g., servers vs. workstations) - Business unit or ownership group - Internet-facing vs. internal systems - **Compare with MTTP and MOVA** - High MTTR + Low MTTP → Non-patching delays (e.g., config/code fixes) - Low MTTR + High MOVA → Backlog of old vulnerabilities not yet addressed - **Align with SLAs** Use MTTR to assess whether you are meeting defined remediation timelines by severity. ### **5. Summary** **Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR)** is a core metric for: - Measuring end-to-end remediation speed - Identifying bottlenecks across vulnerability management workflows - Tracking SLA compliance and risk reduction performance - Benchmarking progress and justifying operational improvements Balbix automates MTTR tracking to help teams continuously improve remediation efficiency and reduce exposure across their environment. > ### **See Also:** > > [Understanding MTTP](/balbixhelp/docs/understanding-mttp) > > [Understanding MOVA](/balbixhelp/docs/understanding-mova)
