What Is MTTP?** **Mean Time to Patch (MTTP)** measures the average time it takes to apply a vendor-released security patch after it becomes available. It is related to, but different from Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR), focusing specifically on patch-based remediation (excluding config changes, code fixes, etc.). **MTTP answers:** *“Once a vendor releases a patch, how long does it take us to successfully deploy it across affected systems?”* **How Balbix Helps:** Balbix automatically tracks patch release and deployment timelines by integrating vulnerability data with asset and patch status (via agents or authenticated scans). This enables automated, accurate MTTP calculation, no manual tracking required. ### **MTTP vs. MTTR: What’s the Difference?** | **Metric** | **MTTP (Mean Time to Patch)** | **MTTR (Mean Time to Remediate)** | | --- | --- | --- | | Focus | Time to apply a vendor-released security patch | Time to fully remediate a vulnerability (patch, config fix, etc.) | | Start Point | Patch release by vendor | Detection of the vulnerability in your environment | | End Point | Patch applied and verified | Remediation completed and verified | | Scope | Patch-based remediation only | All remediation types (patch, config change, code fix, etc.) | | Use Case | Measures responsiveness to vendor-released fixes | Measures overall remediation efficiency | | External/Internal | External benchmark (based on vendor patch release) | Internal process benchmark (based on detection) | ### **2. Why MTTP Matters** Tracking MTTP provides actionable insight into your patch management efficiency and risk exposure. Key benefits include: - **Patch Management Performance** MTTP directly reflects how quickly your organization responds to patch releases. - **Bottleneck Identification** High MTTP values can uncover delays in testing, approvals, tooling, or scheduling. - **Threat Exposure Reduction** Faster patching reduces the window during which systems are vulnerable to known exploits. - **Crisis Readiness** A low MTTP indicates the ability to quickly respond to zero-day vulnerabilities with patches. - **Compliance Monitoring** Helps ensure adherence to patching SLAs and regulatory timelines. - **Justify Resource Allocation** High MTTP supports the case for better tools, automation, or staffing for patch management. - **Internal & External Benchmarking** Track improvements over time or compare across teams, asset types, or industry peers. ### **3. How MTTP Is Calculated in Balbix** Balbix automates MTTP calculation using the following approach: 1. **Define Asset Scope** MTTP is computed for all assets with relevant vulnerability patch information and made available for all associated asset groups and filtered asset scopes, within the defined time period 1. **Identify Patch Events** Detect security patches and application timestamps across assets. 2. **Capture Two Key Timestamps** - **Patch Release Timestamp** – when the vendor made the patch available (collected from public disclosures). - **Patch Deployment Timestamp** – when the patch was confirmed installed (from sources such as Balbix HA agents, Tanium, or Cortex XDR). 1. **Compute Individual Times to Patch** Patch Applied – Patch Released = Time to Patch (in days) 2. **Calculate Weighted Average MTTP** Balbix applies exponential recency weighting so recent patching behavior impacts the score more than older events. This ensures MTTP reflects current practices and trends. > **Note:** MTTP calculations are currently supported for OS patches on **Windows and macOS** assets only. > > > > **Required Tools:** Balbix Host Analyzer (HA), **Tanium**, or **Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR** must be integrated for patch data ingestion. ### **4. Interpreting MTTP in Balbix** When reviewing MTTP metrics in Balbix: - **Lower MTTP Is Better** Indicates faster patching and reduced exposure to known threats. - **Monitor Trends Over Time** Look for decreases (improvement) or spikes (potential delays needing investigation). - **Segment for Contextual Insight** Filter by asset type, OS, business unit, or criticality to identify areas needing improvement. - **Compare MTTP and MTTR** - High MTTP + High MTTR → patching inefficiencies. - Low MTTP vs. High MTTR → non-patching remediations (e.g., config changes) may be the bottleneck. - **Understand the MTTP/MTTR Distinction** - **MTTP** is measured from vendor patch release. - **MTTR** is measured from vulnerability detection. - **MTTP** captures responsiveness vs. external patch release dates; MTTR reflects internal remediation workflows. ### **5. Summary** **Mean Time to Patch (MTTP)** is a vital metric for organizations aiming to: - Improve patch velocity and reduce dwell time of known vulnerabilities - Monitor performance of patch management workflows - Support SLA tracking and risk reduction metrics - Demonstrate compliance and responsiveness to emerging threats Balbix simplifies MTTP tracking by automatically calculating the metric across your environment, enabling proactive decisions to optimize security posture. > ### **See Also:** > > [Understanding MTTR](/balbixhelp/docs/understanding-mttr-1) > > [Understanding MOVA](/balbixhelp/docs/understanding-mova)
